Conservation & Preservation

The conservation and preservation of Islamic manuscripts (MSS) have always been among the main objectives of the Foundation. We have, so far, carried out some investigations to ascertain the most efficient and broadly accepted technology for this activity.

We have engaged in compiling lists of selected titles of MSS that should take priority in any preservation programme.

Two principal themes are evident: the need to persevere intact the MSS in their original form, and the possibility of making available the data of the MSS through the use of microfilm and CDRom, taking advantage of the most advanced techniques of scanning and photography.

These two endeavours are shown to be complementary: once the data of a given MS can be studied by scholars and students and the more durable and accessible mode of computerised images, the actual MS itself can be – as it were – ‘retired’ from active service, and held as a historic document and a work of art in its own right.

The aesthetic, historical and cultural value embodied in the MS is thus served by technology. The intellectual value enshrined in the texts can be brought to light without damaging the MS as an object.

Several institutes in both Eastern and Western countries are already involved in preservation activities, and have built significant collections of microfilms. Others have started to transfer MSS material onto CDRom.
