Al-Daleel al-Irshadi ila al-Maqasid al-Shari’ah (Bibliography for Maqāsid al Shari’ah)

The study of the philosophy of Islamic law, especially its maqasid (objectives, purposes, goals, intents and underlying principles) is a pre-requisite to understanding the Qur’an and the prophetic tradition, and to developing the Islamic law in a way that achieves common good for Muslims and protects them from harm. This Bibliography, prepared by Dr Mohammed Kamal Imam, concentrates on new research on the theories of priorities, utility, consequences and universal principles of Islamic law.

The Encyclopaedia of Makkah al-Mukarramah and Madinah al-Munawwarah

It was always a dream and an inspirational vision for the founder and the chairman of Al-Furqan, His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, to produce an encyclopaedia of the two holy cities, acknowledging their scientific and cultural roles throughout the centuries. Dr Abbas Saleh Tashqandy was the first with whom Sheikh Yamani raised the idea in 1978.

The Encyclopaedia of Makkah al-Mukarramah and Madinah al-Munawwarah is a pioneering and timely project aiming to provide above all, an accurate knowledge and reference, hence contributing to the world knowledge and culture, creating opportunities for dialogue between civilisations.

The World Survey of Islamic Manuscripts

In 1989, the Foundation set up a research project to investigate as comprehensively as possible the collections of Islamic manuscripts existing worldwide. After four years of tireless work and effort, the project resulted in The World Survey of Islamic Manuscripts in 4 volumes, which is the most wide-ranging survey to date, both in terms of the countries and the languages covered. By successfully completing the Survey, the Foundation made history in the field of Islamic manuscripts.

The Fifth Training Course on Editing, under the title “Rules and Methods of Editing Manuscripts in the Field of Sharia’h Sciences and Theology”; from the 2nd until 6th June 2013, at Markaz Mu’tamarat Al-Az’har in Madinat al-Nasr, Cairo-Egypt

The Centre for the Study of Islamic Manuscripts in co-operation with Markaz Tahqiq al-Nusus (the Centre for Critical Editions) at Al-Az’har organised the second joined training course on editing. Forty two participants from the academic community, manuscript authorisation research centres, libraries and postdoctoral candidates all took part in the training course.

“The Objectives of Islamic Law and the International Agreements”; the 7th training course on maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah (objectives of Islamic law), organised by the Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law at Al-Furqān Islamic Heritage Foundation in co-operation with Alexandria Centre for Arbitration and Legal and Economic Services at the Faculty of Law - University of Alexandria, from 9 until 14 February 2013, at the Faculty of Law - University of Alexandria, Egypt.

The Seventh Training Course on maqāsid al-Shari’ah (objectives of Islamic law) was held at the Ahmed Zaki Yamani Theatre at the Faculty of Law at the University of Alexandria between the 9th and 14th of February 2013.Delivered by a renowned team of specialists of Shari’ah and law, it was well received by twenty five participants made up of researchers, post doctoral candidates and faculty members from an array of Egyptian, Algerian and Libyan universities.

The Third Training Course on Editing, under the title “Methods and Rules of Critical Edition - Introductory Course on Editing Manuscripts”; from 2nd to 7th June 2012, at Salih Kamil Centre, at Al-Az’har University in Cairo

The Third Training Course on Editingwas organised by Al-Furqan Foundation in collaboration with the Centre for Editing Texts (Markaz Tahqiq al-Nusus) at Al-Az’har, under the title “Methods and Rules of Critical Edition- Introductory Course on Editing Manuscripts”. The course took place at Salih Kamil Centre at Al-Az’har University in Cairo and lasted a whole week, from 2nd to 7th June 2012, with participants coming from a highly qualified and experienced scientific elite (holding postgraduate diplomas and doctorates) from different university disciplines and cultural institutions from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Nigeria and Indonesia.

The Second Training Course on Editing; from 28th February to 27th April 2009, at Dar al-Uloom, Cairo – Egypt

Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in cooperation with the Faculty of Dar al-Uloom at Cairo University organized the Second Training Course on Editing, in the period between 28th February and 27th April 2009. This course was attended by 58 participants, working in the field of editing, from different university disciplines and cultural institutions from Egypt, Syria, Qatar, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, etc.

The First Training Course on Editing; from 28th February to 28th May 2008, at Dar al-Uloom, Cairo – Egypt

Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in co-operation with the Faculty of Dar al-Uloom at Cairo University organized a training course on editing Arabic and Islamic manuscripts, the first training course of its kind within the frame of our Foundation’s activities. The training course took place in the period between 28th February and 28th May 2008 and was attended by more than 37 participants, working in the field of editing.

The First Training Course on Cataloguing; from 3rd January to 8th February 1994, at the Central Library, Cairo – Egypt

The First Training Course on Cataloguing, organized by Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in co-operation with Cairo University, took place from 3rd January until 8th February 1994, at the Central Library, Cairo – Egypt. The course was held in the Central Library at Cairo University and was inaugurated by the chairman of Al-Furqan, H.E. Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, and the president of Cairo University, Professor Mufid Shihab.

The Eighth Training Course on Cataloguing, under the title: “Training Course on Cataloguing the Palestinian Manuscripts, Documents, Legal Records and Ottoman Administrative Papers (Defters)”; from 6th to 22nd December 2009

Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in co-operation with the Center for Documents and Manuscripts at the University of Jordan organized a training course on cataloguing. The training course took place at the University of Jordan and lasted two weeks, from 6th until 22nd December 2009. It was attended by 22 librarians from different universities and institutions in Palestine, Iraq and Jordan.

The Eighth Training Course on Editing, under the title "Editing the traditional text"; from 20th April until 24th April 2014, at the National Library of Kuwait.

Within the framework of on-going collaboration between the Centre for the Study of Islamic Manuscripts at Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation, and the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts, and in co-operation with the Kuwait National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, the Kuwait National Commission for Education, Science & Culture, and the National Library of Kuwait, the Centre organised a practical training course on the critical editing of Islamic manuscripts, which took place from 20 to 24 April 2014, at the National Library of Kuwait. The course primarily targeted Kuwaiti researchers and students interested in the written heritage and the critical editing.

The training course on the philosophy of Islamic law addressing the “Objectives of the Noble Qurʾān” (Part 3) was held at Hotel Kenzi Tower in Casablanca, Morocco, over the course of three days, 9 – 11 May 2017. The course was organised by the Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law at Al-Furqān, in partnership with the Maqasid Research & Studies Centre (Rabat), and the Department of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Letters & Humanities in Mohammedia.

The 10th Training Course on Critical Edition, titled "Editing Manuscripts of Qurʾānic sciences: Fundamentals, Basics and Problems" was organised by the Manuscript Centre at Al-Furqān Islamic Heritage Foundation in partnership with Dar al-Hadith al-Hassania Institute (Rabat, Morocco), where the course was held between the 29th of February and the 5th of March 2016.

The 10th Training Course on the philosophy of Islamic law titled “Objectives (Maqāṣid) of the Noble Quran” from 28-30 May 2015, Rabat – Morocco

The Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law at Al-Furqān, in partnership with the Maqāṣid Research & Studies Centre (Rabat), and the Faculty of Letters & Humanities - Department of Islamic Studies, Mohammed V University (Rabat) organised the 10th training course on the Philosophy of Islamic Law, titled “Objectives of the Noble Quran”. The training course was convened from the 28th to the 30th of May 2015, at the conference suite, Golden Tulip “Farah” Hotel in Rabat, Morocco, with the participation of around 120 scholars and researchers specialising in the area of Maqāṣid, coming from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, London, and Moroccan cities. Lectures were delivered by a distinguished group of leading experts in the area of Islamic law (Sharī‘ah).

9th Training Course on the philosophy of Islamic law (Maqāsid) under the title “Applying the philosophy of Islamic Law (Maqāsid) between fear and leniency”; organised by the Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law at Al-Furqan, in partnership with the Maqāsid Research & Studies Centre (Rabat), Université Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah (Sais-Fes), the Master Course on the “Philosophy of Islamic Law (Maqāsid al-Shariah) in the Maliki School of Jurisprudence (Fiqh)” and the Faculty of Letters & Humanities (Sais-Fes), between the 28th to the 30th of May 2014, Fez, Morocco.

The Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law at Al-Furqan, in partnership with the Maqāsid Research & Studies Centre (Rabat), Université Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah (Sais-Fes), the Master Course on the “Philosophy of Islamic Law (Maqāsid al-Shariah) in the Maliki School of Jurisprudence (Fiqh)” and the Faculty of Letters & Humanities (Sais-Fes), organised a training course from the 28th to the 30th of May 2014 in Fez, Morocco. The Seventh Training Course on Editing, under the title "Editing Manuscripts in the Field of Hadith and its Sciences and Biographies"; from 3rd until 8th March 2014, at Dar al-Hadith al-Hassania Institute in Rabat - Morocco

The Centre for the Study of Islamic Manuscripts, at Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in collaboration with Dar al-Hadith Al-Hassania Institute of the Ministry of Awqaf in Morocco organised a training course on the critical editing of Islamic manuscripts. The training course took place from the 2nd to the 8th of March 2014, at the Dar al-Hadith Al-Hassania Institute headquarters in Rabat, and was designed for Ph.D. and MA students at the Moroccan universities and specialists in manuscripts studies from other Arab countries..

The Fourth Training Course on Editing, under the title "The Introductory Course on Editing Islamic Manuscripts"; from 18th until 28th of March 2013, in Rabat, Morocco

The Fourth Training Course on Editing was organised by Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in co-operation with The Faculty of Arts and Humanities Ben M’sik, University of Hassan II in Casablanca and took place from 18th until 28th March 2013, at The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Hassan II, Casablanca, Morocco. Participants, some with a background in the field and others from research centres came from as far afield as Yemen, Algeria, Libya, Kenya and Ghana. The course was also attended by lecturers from Morocco and other countries.

The 4th Training Course on Codicology, under the title "Arabic Codicology: The Islamic Manuscript Heritage in the El Escorial Collection”; from 3rd until 7th of July 2017, at San Lorenzo de El Escorial, in Madrid – Spain.

The Centre for the Study of Islamic Manuscripts at Al-Furqān Islamic Heritage Foundation, in co-operation with Fundación General de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, organised the fourth training course on codicology, titled “Arabic Codicology: The Islamic Manuscript Heritage in the El Escorial Collection”. The course took place from the 3rd to the 7th of July 2017, at San Lorenzo de El Escorial (situated 45km north-west of the capital Madrid, Spain), within the framework of the Complutense University Summer Courses. The Course was attended by 16 selected delegates, coming from different countries (including Algeria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Estonia, Syria, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Columbia), and specialised in various subject areas, involving research on Islamic manuscripts.

The course was attended by 16 delegates, chosen from different countries, such as the United States of America, Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Spain, Holland, Bulgaria, Brazil, and Morocco, on the basis of their specialisation in manuscripts and their interest in Islamic heritage.

The Seventh Training Course on Cataloguing took place from 7th until 25th November 2008, in Aleppo, Syria. 36 participants from Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq completed the course, which was organized by Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation and hosted by the Waqfiyah Library (Al-Maktaba al-Waqfiyya).

The Sixth Training Course on Editing, under the title "The Principles of Editing the Heritage Text"; from 27th January until 6th February 2014, at the Centre for Islamic Studies (ISAM) in Istanbul, Turkey

In the spirit of co-operation between Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation, the Centre for Islamic Research (ISAM) in Istanbul and the Institute of Arabic Manuscripts in Cairo, Al-Furqan Foundation organised a training course on the critical editing of manuscripts, delivered by a group of scholars working in the field. It was held in the Islamic Research Center in Istanbul.

The Ninth Training Course on Cataloguing; from 13th to 29th September 2010, at the Suleymaniye Library, Istanbul – Turkey

The Foundation organized its second training course in cataloguing manuscripts at Suleymaniye Library, from 13th to 29th September 2010, in co-operation with IRCICA (Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture) and the Suleymaniye Library. The training course was attended by 54 participants.

The Second Training Course on Cataloguing, organized by Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in co-operation with IRCICA (Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture) and the Suleymaniye Library, took place from 29th August until 30th September 1994, at the Suleymaniye Library, Istanbul – Turkey. The course lasted five weeks and was divided into a theoretical (2 weeks) and a practical (3 weeks) section.

“Science and Engineering in the Islamic Heritage”, a Symposium organised by Al-Furqān Islamic Heritage Foundation – Centre for the Study of Islamic Manuscripts, in co-operation with the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (UK), on Saturday 18th March 2017, in London.

The Centre for the Study of Islamic Manuscripts at Al-Furqān Islamic Heritage Foundation, in co-operation with Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (UK), organised a Symposium titled “Science and Engineering in the Islamic Heritage”, on Saturday, 18th March 2017, at Al-Furqān’s headquarters in London.

The 11th training course on the Philosophy of Islamic Law, under the title "Applying the Sharīʿah Objectives in the Daʾwah Sphere", 5-7 September 2015 (21-23 Dhul Qa‘dah 1436H), London.

The Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law, in partnership with the Islamic Cultural Centre in London, organised the second Training Course on the philosophy of Islamic law (Maqāšid al-Sharī‘ah), under the title: “Applying the objectives of Islamic law (Maqāšid) in Da‘wah work”, on 5-7 September 2015 (21-23 Dhul Qa‘dah 1436H), at the Islamic Cultural Centre in London. Over 100 delegates participated in the course; some of whom were specialists in the field. Others were students engaged in further studies at British universities in different areas of specialisation, Islamic preachers, mosque leaders, and media professionals.

8th Training Course on the philosophy of Islamic law (Maqāsid) under the title “The Objectives of Sharī'ah: the Principles and Concepts”; organised by the Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law at Al-Furqān in partnership with the Islamic Cultural Centre & the London Central Mosque Trust & UK Board of Shariah Councils; from Saturday 30th November to Tuesday 3rd December 2013, at the Islamic Cultural Centre in London.

Between the 30th of November and the 3rd of December 2013 the Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law (Maqāsid al-Sharī'ah Centre) at Al-Furqān Foundation, in collaboration with both the Islamic Cultural Centre and the Sharī'ah Councils of the UK organised the Eighth Training Course on Maqāsid of Islamic Sharī'ah. More than 100 trainees took part in the course and they were of high academic background of various specialisations and expertise, including postgraduate students reading at British universities, imams, researchers in Islamic studies, etc.

The Third Training Course on Cataloguing; from 30th May to 30th June 1995, in London

The Third Training Course on Cataloguing was organized by Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in co-operation with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. Two theoretical weeks of the course were conducted at Eagle House, and the three weeks of practical cataloguing work in the Library at SOAS, where the manuscripts collection of the School of Oriental and African Studies was placed at the disposal of the course members.
