The importance of this book lies in its clear presentation of all the political events which occurred in Makkah, month by month, at the beginning of the Ottoman period. This includes information on the Ḥajj officials and their relationship with the descendants of the Prophet (Ashrāf) and with the Makkan society, while outlining the links Makkah had with the other Ottoman provinces such as Egypt and Yemen. It gives details on the economic life including markets places and foodstuff pricing. Furthermore, it describes the population of Makkah, its rich and poor, difficult and flourishing times. The book contains also other important information on the types of currencies used, the social life of the Makkans in their celebratory events like marriage ceremonies, births, deaths and sightings of the new moon. A special attention is given to the month of Ramaḍān, and Ḥajj, as well as to particular events during the month of Rabiʿ al-Awwal, like the celebration of the birth of the Prophet of Islām, mentioning en passant the scholars’ views in its regard.
